Google acquires Wiz for $32 billion to boost cloud security amid AI threats.

Summary

The deal still requires regulatory approvals and other clearances before it can be finalized.

NEW DELHI: Google has signed a “definitive agreement” to acquire Wiz, a New York-based cloud security startup, for $32 billion in an all-cash deal.

This will be Google’s largest acquisition to date and is expected to close in 2026.

The move aims to strengthen Google’s cloud security offerings amid rising threats driven by artificial intelligence.

Wiz will become part of Google Cloud but will continue to offer its products across all major platforms like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle Cloud.

“Google Cloud is a leader in cloud infrastructure, with deep AI expertise and a track record of industry-leading security innovation,” Google said in a statement.

“Bringing all this to Wiz will help make their solutions even better and more scalable, benefiting customers and partners across all major clouds.”

Wiz had previously walked away from a $23 billion acquisition offer by Google in 2024. At the time, Wiz co-founder Assaf Rappaport told employees that the company would instead focus on going public and achieving $1 billion in annual recurring revenue.

“Saying no to such humbling offers is tough,” Rappaport wrote in a memo in July 2024. He cited concerns related to antitrust issues and investor pressure as reasons for declining the earlier deal.

Wiz, founded in 2020, quickly grew to become a major player in cloud security. The company achieved $100 million in annual recurring revenue within 18 months.

Its products focus on prevention, detection, and response, attracting big clients like Morgan Stanley, BMW, and luxury brand LVMH.

Google’s decision to acquire Wiz is seen as a strategic step to strengthen its position in the competitive cloud computing space.

The deal will enhance Google Cloud’s ability to compete with Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure.

“Google Cloud and Wiz share a common goal of making cybersecurity more approachable and user-friendly for organizations of all sizes and sectors,” said Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian.

“By helping more businesses prevent cyberattacks—especially in complex software environments—we aim to reduce the costs, disruptions, and challenges posed by security breaches.”

The acquisition is expected to benefit Google’s broader investments in artificial intelligence by strengthening its cybersecurity portfolio.

The company stressed the growing importance of cybersecurity in the face of rising AI-driven threats.

“The growing reliance on AI and cloud services has fundamentally transformed the security landscape,” Google said.

“This has elevated cybersecurity’s role in countering emerging threats and safeguarding national security.”

The deal still requires regulatory approvals and other clearances before it can be finalized. Once complete, Wiz will fully integrate into Google Cloud while maintaining its cross-platform capabilities.
