Killer Delhi cop convinced friend’s kin she was alive, held after 2 yrs

NEW DELHI: A policeman murdered his female friend, a sub-inspector of UP Police for rejecting his demands, and staged an elaborate cover-up to keep the secret for two years by making it look like the victim was living a happy life in Punjab, investigators have found.

Before joining the UP Police, the woman was a constable in the Delhi Police and was also preparing for civil services examination. She stayed at the coaching hub of Mukherjee Nagar.

In 2021, head constable Surender Singh (42) strangulated Mona Yadav (28) and dumped her body in a drain in Delhi’s Burari with the help of his associates Ravin (26), and Rajpal (33).

On Sunday, the crime branch of Delhi Police arrested the accused and recovered the skeletal remains of the victim.

The accused allegedly staged an elaborate cover-up to keep the murder secret for two years, including making calls to the victim’s family from different locations in Punjab and sending them morphed and edited recorded voice messages.

Singh had been pressuring Mona to agree to his demands. When she refused, he strangled her and drowned her in a drain near Burari Pusta on September 8, 2021.

To keep Mona’s family from finding out what had happened, Singh and his associates staged a drama to make it seem like she was still alive. Ravin pretended to be “Arvind” from Punjab, with whom Mona was supposedly staying. He took prostitutes to various hotels in Punjab and intentionally left documents related to Mona in the hotel rooms. He also called Mona’s family members from the same hotel to misguide them.

Ravin also made calls to Mona’s family members from a SIM card provided by Rajpal. He informed them that Mona was staying with him in Punjab and sent them morphed and edited recorded voice messages in her voice.

Mona’s family continued to search for her for two years, and eventually approached the Delhi Police Commissioner. The case was transferred to the Crime Branch, which was able to track down and arrest Singh and his associates.

During interrogation, the accused said that he knew the woman since 2018, when both were posted in Delhi Police’s PCR (police control room) Unit.

“During duties, they became close friends. In the year 2020, the girl resigned from Delhi Police for the preparation of civil services examinations and started residing in a PG at Mukherjee Nagar, Delhi. But Surender Singh kept visiting her family, and even attended some family functions,” said Special Commissioner of Police (crime) Ravinder Yadav.

Yadav further said: “He disclosed that the girl was not ready to give in to his demands. On September 8, 2021, there was a fierce fight as she was not succumbing to his demands and he got agitated and decided to kill her. He took her to Burari Pushta, where he first strangulated her and then drowned her in the nala near the Pushta. He kept stones on the body to submerge it.”
