ED arrests TMC’s Gokhale for embezzling crowd-sourced money

Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested Trinamool Congress spokesperson Saket Gokhale, who is currently in the custody of Gujarat Police, for allegedly embezzling funds collected through crowdfunding.

Gokhale was taken into custody by the ED for money laundering under criminal provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) from Ahmedabad jail.

According to sources, he will be produced before a local court to seek his remand.

Gokhale was arrested for the diversion of funds collected through crowdfunding. He allegedly collected ₹1.07 crore but used only ₹4,000 for the purpose the fund was collected.

₹4 lakh was used to purchase liquor, sources said.

On December 29 last year, he was arrested by the Gujarat Police from Delhi in a case registered by it on charges of misusing crowd-sourced money.

Earlier, the TMC leader was arrested by the state police and later released on bail in a case regarding a tweet for spreading fake news about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Morbi.

TMC is engaged in a bitter political battle with the BJP over his arrest.
