ED arrests Jharkhand Chief Engineer after 2 days searches; Rs 125 cr property identified

After two days of marathon searches at several locations in Jharkhand and Bihar, the Enforcement Direcrorate (ED) on Thursday arrested chief engineer Virendra Ram in connection with a money laundering case. During searches the ED discovered details of his property worth Rs 125 crore, sources said.

Ram was taken into custody under the criminal sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) after a prolonged session of questioning at the agency’s office in Jharkhand capital Ranchi.

The ED had carried out searches at several premises linked to Virendra Ram, who was posted as Chief Engineer in the Jharkhand Rural Development department in state capital Ranchi and Bihar’s Siwan among others.

During searches the ED sleuths got several documents of properties and luxury vehicles which were bought in the names of relatives and his wife.

Virendra Ram came under ED radar after the state anti corruption department in 2019 carried out searches at the premises of an official in Jharkhand’s rural department and arrested him while taking a bribe of Rs 10,000.

According to ED sources, the financial agency has also recovered cash to the tune of Rs 50 lakh and jewellery worth Rs 1.5 crore.

The source said that during searches the agency has got the details of over Rs 125 crore worth property linked to the chief engineer.

The source said that value of the properties linked to the Chief engineer may go up as the ED sleuths are still analyzing the market rates of properties spread in several states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Haryana and Delhi.

However, senior officials of the ED remained tight-lipped on the development and the seizures made till now during searches.
