Delhi braces for punishing heatwave as temperatures soar to record-breaking 46 degrees celsius

Delhi is set to experience a heatwave today, as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for the city.  On Sunday, certain parts of Delhi endured scorching temperatures as the mercury climbed above 45 degrees Celsius. The India Meteorological Department reported that Najafgarh recorded the highest temperature at 46.3 degrees Celsius. The city experienced extreme heat, posing challenges for its residents.

The IMD has officially declared a heatwave warning for Delhi-NCR and neighboring areas. Today marks the first day when temperatures reach 45 degrees Celsius or higher in certain parts of the city. According to IMD, the criteria for a heatwave are met when the maximum temperature exceeds 45 degrees Celsius or more for two consecutive days. The declaration of a heatwave is made on the second day.

Heatwave conditions are expected to persist in pockets of south Haryana, south Uttar Pradesh, west Rajasthan, east Madhya Pradesh, and Gangetic West Bengal on May 22. Additionally, Jharkhand is likely to experience heatwave conditions as well.

To combat the extreme heat, the IMD advises residents to take precautions such as avoiding direct exposure to the sun, wearing lightweight and light-colored loose cotton clothes, and covering the head with a cloth, hat, or umbrella. Staying hydrated is crucial, and people are urged to drink sufficient water, even if they don’t feel thirsty. Homemade drinks like lassi, torani (rice water), lemon water, buttermilk, and ORS (oral rehydration solution) can also help maintain hydration levels.

While Delhi and other regions brace for the heatwave, parts of Karnataka, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Northeast India are expected to receive isolated heavy rainfall early in the week.

It is important for residents in affected areas to stay cautious, follow the recommended guidelines, and prioritize their health and well-being during this period of extreme weather conditions. Stay safe and cool during the heatwave, and seek medical attention if necessary.
