NEW DELHI: Ahead of the FIH Pro League 2024/25, Indian Men’s Hockey Team Head Coach Craig Fulton shared the team’s strategy.
With a packed schedule ahead, the focus is on maintaining consistency and improving performance. The team will balance fitness with fresh talent to tackle the challenges.
Fulton discussed the high stakes of the competition. The back-to-back matches will have an intensity similar to the Olympic Games.
To manage this, India has opted for a larger squad. Fulton believes this will help maintain performance throughout the tournament.
Key Focus Areas for Success
Tejasvi Pandey from The New Indian asked, “India has shown great progress under your coaching. What will be the key focus areas for the team to maintain consistency, dominance, and playing style in this FIH Pro League?”
In response, Coach Craig Fulton acknowledged the challenges of maintaining success. “I think complacency is one of the biggest challenges, because success brings its own set of challenges,” he said.
Despite facing a tighter training schedule, Fulton believes the team is in good form. “Our group is hungry to improve, and we need to see that now in this first block. Although we’ve had less training time together, they’re playing good hockey. They’ve all had reasonably good performances in the league and have performed well for their franchises,” he added.
The Indian Men’s Hockey Team is hopeful that this league experience will translate into consistent performances on the international stage.
Managing the Intense Schedule
With eight games in just 10 or 11 days, the pressure will be intense. Managing fatigue and making quick adjustments will be crucial.
Fulton pointed out, “I think with eight games in 10 or 11 days, it’s like an Olympic schedule, so it’s not easy. That’s why we have a bigger squad with 24 players.” The larger squad offers the flexibility to make changes, especially for the second block of games.
This strategy will ensure the team can maintain high performance throughout the Pro League.
The key to success will be consistency and the ability to leverage collective experience. The Indian Men’s Hockey Team, led by Craig Fulton, is ready to leave its mark on the FIH Pro League 2024/25.
