New Delhi: In a shocking incident at Delhiโs Dwarka court, a convict and his lawyer verbally abused and threatened a woman judge after she delivered a guilty verdict in a six-year-old cheque bounce case.
The accused, convicted under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, allegedly held an object and attempted to throw it at the judge while hurling threats.
Courtroom Outburst After Unfavourable Judgment
On April 2, Judicial Magistrate Shivangi Mangla convicted the accused in the case. Following the verdict, the convict reportedly erupted in anger, using foul language and making derogatory remarks about the judgeโs family. He allegedly threatened, โMeet us outside, and we will see how you return home alive.โ
The judge noted in her order that the convict and his lawyer, Athul Kumar, mentally harassed her, pressuring her to resign or acquit the accused. They allegedly warned that they would file a complaint against her to force her resignation.
Legal Action Initiated
Magistrate Mangla recommended action against the convict before the National Commission for Women (NCW) for threats and harassment. She also issued a showcause notice to his lawyer, seeking an explanation for his conduct and potential criminal contempt proceedings.
Three days later, on April 5, the convict was sentenced to 22 months in jail and fined โน6.65 lakh. His lawyer pleaded for leniency, citing his clientโs age (63) and his three unemployed sons.
The matter has now been referred to the principal district judge for further action, including possible contempt proceedings in the Delhi High Court. The incident highlights the increasing challenges faced by judicial officers in maintaining courtroom decorum and safety.
