Clinical Hyderabad Hand Gujarat Their First Defeat of IPL 2022

MUMBAI: Sunrisers Hyderabad on Monday chased down 163 in 19.1 overs at the loss of two wickets to hand Gujarat Titans their first defeat of the Indian Premier League 2022.

Batting first, Gujarat lost Shubman Gill in the 3rd over as he was dismissed for 7 by Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Matthew Wade and Sai Sudharshan also couldn’t do much as they fell for 19 and 11 respectively.

Captain Hardik Pandya assessed the pitch nicely and played a superbly responsible innings. He remained unbeaten for 50 off 42 balls, and smashed four boundaries and a six. He also became the third quickest to hammer 100 sixes in the IPL after Andre Russell and Chris Gayle.

Pandya took 1046 balls to tonk 100 sixes, while Russell and Gayle had taken 657 and 943 balls respectively.

Abhinav Manohar unfurled an electrifying cameo of 35 runs off 21 balls in death overs and catapulted Gujarat to 162 in 20 overs.

Left-hander Abhishek Sharma and Hyderabad’s captain Kane Williamson once again gave a solid start to their team as they racked up 64 runs for the first wicket before he was nipped out by leg-spinner Rashid Khan. Williamson exhibited tremendous composure as he made 57 off 46 balls. He was adjudged Man of the Match for his splendid innings.

Nicholas Pooran in the end went hammer and tongs as notched up 34 runs off just 18 balls. His innings included two sixes and two boundaries. He clouted Darshan Nalkande for six to seal the win for Hyderabad on the first ball of the 20th over.

“I think batting wise we were 7-10 runs short. That would have made a difference in the end. We started well with the ball, but those two overs where they scored 30 runs, got them back into the game. They bowled well and stuck to their plans, credit to them for the way they bowled. We need to learn from the mistakes, we will have a conversation and a laugh as we have out next game in a couple of days,” said Pandya after the match.

“We as a batting group knew that we just had to learn from our mistakes in the past. We knew we had to build partnerships. It was a bit challenging as wicket was two-paced, and was sticking in the wicket a bit. I try to improve every single day that I train. Fortunately we have some amazing coaches here who are sitting and having some amazing conversations with us,” stated Pooran.

“It was, I thought , a very good game of cricket. Probably it was a par total. They had a strong bowling attack. We wanted to get partnerships and we got that. The guys have been clear about the roles. There are a number of challenges. The execution was largely good. It was tough to hit through the line. Nice to get some partnerships and get across the line,” Williamson said.
