Civilian Injured In Shopian Terror Attack

SRINAGAR: A civilian was injured as the terrorists opened fire at him in the south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Wednesday evening, the Kashmir Zone Police tweeted.

The incident took place a day after a Hindu school teacher named Rajni Bala was shot dead by terrorists in Gopalpora in the Kulgam district of south Kashmir.

“#Terrorist fired upon one #civilian Farooq Ahmad Sheikh in Chidren, Keegam area of #Shopian. He got injury in leg & has been shifted to hospital. His condition is stated to be stable. @JmuKmrPolice,” the Kashmir Zone Police said in a tweet.

“Today at about 2100hrs (9 pm) Shopian Police received information about a terror crime incident at Rakh-Chidren Keegam area of Shopian where terrorists had fired upon a civilian,” the police said.

“Preliminary investigation has revealed that terrorists had fired upon a civilian identified as Farooq Ahmad Sheikh, son of Ghulam Nabi Sheikh near his residence Rakh-Chidren Keegam area of Shopian,” the police said.

“He had sustained gunshot injuries in his leg and was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. His condition is said to be stable,” it added.

Police have registered a case in this regard under relevant sections of law. An investigation is in progress and officers continue to work to establish the circumstances which lead to this terror crime. Area has been cordoned off and a search in the area is going on.

There has been a surge of attacks on civilians in recent times. Besides Bala, a TV actor named Amreen Bhat was shot dead while her nephew was injured in Budgam district on May 25.

On May 12, Rahul Bhat, a Kashmiri pandit, was shot dead outside the tehsil office in Chadoora town of Budgam.
