CBSE Class 12 results omit merit list to discourage unhealthy competition

Official data indicates that this year, 87.33% of students have successfully passed the Class 12th examinations, a decrease from the 92.71% pass percentage recorded in 2022.

NEW DELHI: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that it will not declare a merit list for the Class 12 exam results. The decision aims to avoid fostering unhealthy competition among students.

In a statement, the CBSE clarified that it will also not assign first, second, or third divisions to students. However, the board will issue merit certificates to “the top 0.1% of students who have achieved the highest marks in their subjects”.

Experts said that the decision of not to release the merit list has been taken to avoid instances of suicide and unwanted stress on students after the results.

Furthermore, the CBSE will provide private students with electronic documents accessible through their Aadhaar number in the DigiLocker platform.

It released the much-anticipated results of the Class 12 examinations on Friday, revealing a remarkable achievement by female students, who have outperformed their male counterparts. However, the overall pass percentage has experienced a decline of 5.38% compared to the previous year, causing concerns among students and education experts.

Official data indicates that this year, 87.33% of students have successfully passed the Class 12th examinations, a decrease from the 92.71% pass percentage recorded in 2022. The regional analysis highlights Trivandrum as the top-performing region, boasting an impressive pass percentage of 99.91%. Bengaluru secured the second position with a commendable 98.64% pass percentage.

CBSE implemented a significant change in the examination pattern this year, reverting to the traditional system of conducting only one board exam at the end of the academic session. In contrast, the previous year featured a divided exam format with two terms, a pattern that several other boards had adopted.

To access their results, students are required to provide their board exam roll number, date of birth, school number, and admit card ID on CBSE’s official websites, such as cbse.gov.in, results.cbse.nic.in, and parikshasangam.cbse.gov.in. While physical marks sheets and certificates will be distributed by schools, digital versions can be accessed through digilocker.gov.in.

The decision not to announce the names of the toppers in the Class 10 or 12 board exams aims to discourage unhealthy competition among students. Candidates dissatisfied with their results have the option to apply for rechecking or revaluation. Moreover, those seeking improvement can appear for the compartment exams scheduled for later this year.

The decline in the pass percentage has ignited discussions surrounding the impact of the altered examination pattern and the necessity for further evaluation of the education system.

Meanwhile, the board also said that the CBSE Class 12th exam for the session 2023-24 will commence on February 15.
