CBI files dual chargesheets in Manipur violence cases

NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) announced on Tuesday that it has submitted two distinct chargesheets in the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kamrup (M), Guwahati (Assam) against five persons implicated in two interconnected cases of Manipur violence.

The charges have been levied against Nohgin Baitekuki, Paolunmang, Smalsawn Haokip, Paominlun Haokip, and Lhingneichang.

The CBI initiated the case in 2023 following allegations that the complainant’s minor daughter had been kidnapped by a minor boy with the intention of marrying her without her consent. Simultaneously, the boy’s father had filed an FIR at Lamphel Police Station, reporting that his 17-year-old son had left home in the morning and had not returned.

Upon the Manipur government’s request, the CBI took over the investigation.

“The investigation into both inter-related cases (stemming from the same incident) revealed that on the morning of July 6, 2023, the boy picked up the minor girl from her tuition class as a pillion rider on his bike. They travelled towards Bishnupur and then to the Thas View Point Area on the old Cachar Road.

At that location, the accused intercepted and held the boy and girl hostage, forcibly taking them away in a vehicle. They were transported to an undisclosed location and presumably killed. Four accused persons were arrested during the investigation and are currently in judicial custody,” stated the CBI.

The CBI has filed chargesheets against the five accused in both cases, with ongoing investigations.

“The public is reminded that the above findings are based on the CBI’s investigation and the evidence it has collected. Under Indian law, accused individuals are presumed innocent until their guilt is conclusively established after a fair trial,” added the official.
