New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a chargesheet against four accused in a high-profile “digital arrest” cyber fraud case before the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan. The case, initially registered by Rajasthan Police, was later transferred to the CBI by the state government.

 How the Fraud Unfolded

The victim, a professor at a renowned educational institution, was allegedly “digitally arrested” by cybercriminals posing as officials from a law enforcement agency. The accused threatened and coerced the victim into paying a staggering ₹7.67 crore between October 2023 and January 2024.

CBI’s Investigation & Arrests

As part of Operation Chakra-V, the CBI conducted nationwide searches, uncovering crucial evidence. So far, eight individuals have been arrested, with charges filed against four within the mandatory 60-day period from their arrest. The remaining four are still under investigation. All accused are currently in judicial custody.

CBI’s Commitment Against Cybercrime

The agency reiterated its zero-tolerance stance against organized cybercrime, vowing to dismantle such syndicates operating within and beyond India’s borders.

This case highlights the growing menace of “digital arrest” scams, where fraudsters impersonate authorities to extort money. The CBI urges the public to remain vigilant against such threats.
