New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today arrested a Superintendent of the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) department in Amroha and a tax advocate in a bribery case involving alleged corruption in penalty waiver.
The CBI registered the case on June 9 based on a complaint from a businessman who alleged that the accused demanded ₹4 lakh to waive a penalty imposed on his family-owned company for non-filing of GST returns. The two were caught red-handed accepting ₹1 lakh as the first installment of the bribe.
During searches at the CGST officer’s residences in Amroha and Gajraula, the CBI recovered ₹3 lakh in cash, 17 property documents worth crores (including flats in Ghaziabad and Moradabad, a commercial shop, and residential plots in Rampur and Gajraula), and a Hyundai Creta registered in his name. Relevant documents were also seized from his office for further scrutiny.
Both accused were produced before the Special CBI Court in Ghaziabad and remanded to judicial custody. The investigation is ongoing.
The case highlights alleged corruption in tax administration, with the CBI tightening scrutiny on public servants involved in graft.
