NEW DELHI: Punjab is set to witness a major industrial boost as Toppan Films, a globally renowned Japanese packaging company, announced an investment of ₹788 crores to expand its operations in Nawanshahr district.

The investment marks a significant milestone in the state’s industrial growth and showcases the success of Punjab’s investor-friendly policies.

Toppan Films, established before 1900, specializes in producing high-quality packaging films for food items, medicines, and electronics. Known for their thin, strong, and environmentally friendly films, Toppan’s products are used globally—from chocolate wrappers and medicine strips to mobile phone components.

The new factory in Nawanshahr, developed in partnership with Max Specialty Films, will feature state-of-the-art Japanese machinery. It will produce a wide range of specialty packaging films, including barrier films for food, pharma-grade packaging for medicines, and anti-static films for electronics. These products will be exported both within India and internationally, carrying the ‘Made in Punjab’ stamp.

This investment is expected to directly generate 2,000–3,000 jobs for engineers, technicians, operators, quality control experts, and management staff. Indirect employment opportunities will also rise across logistics, transport, food services, machine repair, and raw material supply. Special training programs, led by Japanese experts, will upskill local youth in modern packaging technologies, with selected employees sent to Japan for advanced training.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann played a pivotal role in securing the investment, engaging with Japanese business delegations to present Punjab’s industrial potential. Toppan Films’ commitment to eco-friendly packaging aligns with India’s environmental goals, promoting recyclable and naturally decomposable films to tackle plastic pollution.

The company has also announced initiatives for women’s empowerment, including priority employment, managerial opportunities, and creche facilities for working mothers.

Punjab aims to develop Nawanshahr into a ‘Packaging Hub,’ creating a complete ecosystem for packaging industries, from raw material supply to finished goods. The state government hopes Toppan’s success will attract further foreign investment in sectors such as automobiles, pharmaceuticals, electronics, and food processing.

This ₹788 crore investment signifies a transformative moment for Punjab’s industrial landscape. It underscores the state government’s vision of combining strong policies, industrial growth, and employment generation, and it is expected to become a benchmark for industrial development across India.
