Justice Surya Kant emphasizes the joint responsibility of the Bar and Bench in the pursuit of justice

NEW DELHI: Supreme Court Judge Justice Surya Kant stated that the Bar and Bench are two sides of the same coin while speaking at a felicitation event in New Delhi.

He said, “The Bar and Bench are two sides of the same coin, meant for only one goal—the quest for justice. Our endeavor is to find the truth in every matter. As judges, we do our best to ensure that no injustice is done. But an equal responsibility also lies with the Bar, which assists us by providing quality support.”

The felicitation event was organized by the All India Senior Advocates Association (AISAA) to honor four newly appointed Supreme Court judges: Justice N. Kotiswar Singh, Justice R. Mahadevan, Justice Manmohan, and Justice K. Vinod Chandran.

Justice Kant emphasized that while judges strive to ensure justice, the Bar shares an equal responsibility. He urged lawyers to provide high-quality assistance in cases.

“I am sure the enlightened Bar that India has is a tremendous asset to the judiciary. The Bar will continue to contribute, assist us, and be part of the mission and vision to provide affordable justice to the last man standing,” Justice Kant said.

He praised the Indian legal community, noting that India has an enlightened Bar that plays a vital role in ensuring accessible justice.

Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal congratulated the newly appointed judges, stating that they had attained this position due to their clean and pious lives.

Attorney General R. Venkataramani, who also serves as the Chairman of AISAA, addressed the gathering. Former Law Commission Chairman Dr. B.S. Chauhan was also present.

International Council of Jurists President Dr. Adish C. Aggarwala praised Indian judges, describing them as the most hardworking in the world. He added that the Indian Supreme Court has the highest case disposal rate.

AISAA President and Member of Parliament P. Wilson attended the event, along with AISAA Vice President and Member of Parliament Vivek Tankha.

The event was attended by many senior legal experts, including Odisha Advocate General Pitambar Acharya and Additional Solicitor General Brijender Chahar.

The felicitation function featured a lamp-lighting ceremony, with Justice T. Raja, former Acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, participating.
