Ashok Gadgil, Subra Suresh receive highest scientific honour in the US

NEW DELHI: Two Indian-American scientists, Dr. Ashok Gadgil and Dr. Subra Suresh, were honoured with the National Medal of Technology and Innovation by US President Joe Biden at the White House on Tuesday. The award ceremony also acknowledged leading American scientists, technologists, and innovators for their significant contributions to various fields, including medical treatments, addressing the opioid epidemic, enhancing food security, and advancing accessibility.

Who is Dr. Ashok Gadgil?

Dr. Ashok Gadgil, born on November 15, 1950, in Mumbai, is a distinguished physicist. He pursued a degree in Physics from the University of Mumbai, and after that, went on to pursue his Masters in Physics from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT-K), and a PhD in physics from the University of California, Berkeley.

He is currently working as a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and a senior scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Dr. Gadgil research mainly focuses on computational fluid dynamics of indoor air and pollutant flows, building energy efficiency, and water treatment methods. He holds numerous publications and patents.

Who is Dr. Subra Suresh?

Dr. Subra Suresh, a bioengineer, materials scientist, and academic, is a Professor Emeritus and former dean of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Born in Mumbai, he completed a BTech degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M), and further pursued a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Iowa State University and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from MIT.

According to the MIT website, “Professor Subra Suresh’s research is in the following areas: nanomechanics of biological cells and molecules, and human disease states; structure-mechanical property-disease connections in the context of P. falciparum malaria, hereditary blood cell disorders and cancer; computational simulations of cellular and molecular deformation and shape thermodynamics; high force optical tweezers studies of biological cells and human disease states; nanostructured materials; and nanoindentation and microindentation.”
