NEW DELHI: AI research firm Anthropic has reportedly placed a $21 billion order for TPU racks from Broadcom, marking one of the largest-ever single hardware procurements in the AI industry.
The update surfaced after Broadcom’s CEO discussed major TPU-related contracts during an earnings transcript, excerpts of which were shared publicly.
According to the CEO, Broadcom received a $10 billion TPU order in Q3 from Anthropic, followed by an additional $11 billion order scheduled for delivery in late 2026. Together, the two orders bring the total value to approximately $21 billion.
The CEO added a crucial clarification:
“But that does not mean our other customers are using TPUs. In fact, they prefer to control their own destiny by continuing to drive their multi-year journey to create their own custom AI accelerators.”
This indicates that while Anthropic is doubling down on Broadcom’s TPU infrastructure, other top-tier customers—such as major cloud and device companies—continue to explore proprietary chip paths.

Screenshots circulating online show market reactions, with Broadcom’s ($AVGO) stock experiencing volatility after the transcript excerpts appeared. Analysts say the scale of the order highlights the intense competition among AI labs to secure cutting-edge compute capacity.
The move also signals Anthropic’s intention to expand its compute portfolio rapidly as demand for its Claude models surges amid a global race for AI dominance.
