Anjali hit & run case twist: Car occupant who got down before accident

The accident took place in the wee hours of January 1 when Anjali’s scooter was hit by the Baleno car. Due to the impact, she got stuck beneath the car while her companion Nidhi was tossed off the pillion seat.

Anjali Singh was killed by a Baleno car in the wee hours of January 1

Delhi-resident Sahil must be smiling at his luck as he watches five passengers of the Baleno car that he rode on the fateful night of January 1 when the vehicle killed 20-year-old Anjali Singh, being arrested by the police, and ridiculed on TV.

In a new twist in the Sultanpuri horrific hit-and-run case, The New Indian has learnt that Sahil was also an occupant of the car. He also partied with four others and took a ride in the car but got down a few minutes before it hit the young woman and dragged her for 13-km in the new year’s night.

His name surfaced during the interrogation of Deepak Khanna, Amit Khanna, Krishan, Mithun and Manoj Mittal, according to sources in the Delhi Police.

In another interesting twist, it has been revealed that Deepak, currently in police custody, was not part of the new year joy ride. In fact, he was sleeping at his home that night. But the new revelation makes only a little difference to his destiny. Police have found that he was involved in conspiracy and tampering with evidence in the case.

Deepak is a driver of a three-wheeler, known as “Gramin Seva” in some parts of Delhi. He was asked to drive the car as he posses a driving licence (DL) but he did not agree. He was pursued by other accused to confess his involvement, said the police.

Police said four accused – Amit, Krishna, Mithun and Manoj – were sitting in the car, when Anjali got stuck beneath it following a head-on collision with Anjali’s scooter. They will be charged under sections 279 (rash driving), 304A (causing death by negligence), and 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

However, Deepak, Ashutosh Sharma, the owner of the car, and Ankush Khanna, the brother of Amit, will be charged for conspiracy and tampering with evidence.

The police arrested Ashutosh and Ankush from Rohini on Friday. However, Ankush had surrendered himself at Sultanpuri police station. Police sources said the investigators had issued the lookout circular (LOC) against the duo as well.

The car was gifted to Ashutosh by his brother-in-law Lokesh a few years back. After the accident, Amit Khanna, who was driving the car, called up Ashutosh and informed him about the tragedy.

According to the police, Amit blamed Deepak for the incident at the suggestion of Ankush Khanna.

“They decided that if the matter reaches the police, they will tell them that Deepak (Khanna) was driving the car, as he was carrying a driving licence. Police said Sharma had also hidden the fact from the police,” said special commissioner of police Sagarpreet Hooda.

After allegedly hitting and dragging victim Anjali Singh with the Baleno, they parked the vehicle at the residence of Ashutosh and handed him the car keys.
