Adani fires shots: Targets Mahua Moitra for ‘foreign entity’ bribes

BJP MP urges inquiry into alleged breach of Lok Sabha credentials by TMC MP in Cash for Query case.

NEW DELHI: The Adani Group, which has faced significant attention due to allegations of stock manipulation involving its Chairman, Gautam Adani, and alleged favouritism by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, has leveled further accusations against Trinamool Congress (TMC) Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra. These new allegations involve alleged acceptance of bribes from “foreign entities” and were raised on Monday.

These allegations occurred when the BJP MP Nishikant Dubey forwarded a complaint to Speaker Om Birla demanding a probe and suspension of Moitra from the lower house.

The company’s spokesperson said that these complaints “corroborated” their statement on October 9 where they had mentioned that attempts were being made to malign their reputation in the market. They said that these complaints proved that these attempts were being made “since 2018”.

The earlier statement released by the organisation in October had said that foreign entities like the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) and other short sellers had launched a series of attacks against the Adani company.

“These individuals and groups, bound by the common objective of damaging the Adani Group, have developed a playbook which is being executed to perfection by a well-oiled and professional machinery working in sync both within India and abroad,” the company said in a statement.

Initially, a Supreme Court lawyer, Jai Anant Dehadrai, had filed a complaint on Sunday with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) accusing Moitra of receiving bribes from Darsha Hiranandani, the CEO of Hiranandani Group, to specifically target Adani and his group of companies.

The Adani group of companies has been facing a wide array of bombardments from all fronts with extensive allegations, including overcharging consumers for electricity. A recent report by ‘Financial Times’ had accused Adani of purchasing coal for billions of dollars, well above the market price, making consumers pay more for electricity.

Nevertheless, the company has accused these reports of coming at times that have had the “uncanny ability to appear just before the hearing dates” of Adani’s cases at Indian courts.

In response to the report, the Congress party, on the other hand, had called it the “biggest scam of modern India.” However, all of these allegations have been mooted and called “baseless” by the Adani Group themselves.
