ABVP and Left-wing factions collide at JNU’s general body meeting

NEW DELHI: Tension escalated last night at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) as a clash broke out between the ABVP and Left-wing students during a University General Body Meeting.

The confrontation occurred during the meeting, with both sides exchanging heated remarks that quickly escalated into physical altercations, resulting in injuries to several students.

According to ABVP, the altercation began when members of the Left student organisations disrupted the proceedings and verbally abused ABVP members, leading to a confrontation. ABVP alleged that they were targeted for their participation in the meeting.

“Initially, the JNUSU members, led by leftists, hurled casteist abuses over the mic and sound system operators because they did not want ABVP to participate in the UGBM. Feeling insulted, the operators stepped back,” ABVP said in a statement.

“We thwarted all their strategies. Eventually, they resorted to physically assaulting ABVP workers. They didn’t spare even those physically disabled students who were ABVP supporters. They ruthlessly beat up Divyaprakash, a first-year BA Persian student. They also assaulted Kanhaiya, a first-year MA student. Many ABVP supporters and students were injured in the altercation,” the statement further read.

In response, NSUI has condemned the incident, accusing ABVP and affiliated groups of disrupting the atmosphere at JNU. They have initiated a sit-in protest at the Tea Point, with plans for further demonstrations in the coming days. At present, approximately 15 students are participating in the protest, but NSUI asserts that more students and NSUI members will join soon. NSUI stated, “There have been no elections held in JNU for the past five years.”

ABVP has filed a police complaint, claiming that they were attacked by Left-wing students during the meeting. They alleged that the disruption was orchestrated by SFI, AISA, DSF, and other Leftist groups.

The situation remains tense on the JNU campus as both sides offer conflicting accounts of the events that transpired during the General Body Meeting.
