AAP supports BJP’s UCC pitch, emphasizes consensus

AAP, however, says that implementing the UCC without adequate consultation and consensus could trigger public discontent.

NEW DELHI: Days after attending the grand Opposition meet, Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has extended ‘in principal’ support to the BJP’s proposal for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in India.

Announcing the party’s decision, AAP national general secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Sandeep Pathak affirmed that while they endorse the UCC idea, the BJP-led central government must prioritize consensus and consultation with other political parties.

“We fundamentally support the idea of a UCC, as Article 44 of the Constitution also underscores its necessity. However, it is vital to engage in consultations and seek consensus with all political parties and religious organizations before implementing it nationwide,” Pathak told a press conference on Wednesday.

Pathak further emphasized that implementing the UCC without adequate consultation and consensus could trigger public discontent. “Certain issues are irreversible, thus necessitating broader consultations,” he added.

Earlier this week, Pathak convened a meeting at the party’s headquarters, engaging leaders from Haryana and Delhi to discuss the Delhi Ordinance. He announced that the AAP would imminently launch a campaign against the service rules ordinance introduced by the Central government.

The UCC issue gained significant traction in the country following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s advocacy, where he emphasized that India cannot sustain two parallel legal systems and stressed the importance of equality for all citizens.

The prime minister’s remarks on UCC provided opposition parties, including Janata Dal (United), Nationalist Congress Party, Shiromani Akali Dal, and some Congress leaders, with an opportunity to criticize the BJP-led Central government. However, the Congress party has not yet disclosed its stance on the implementation of the UCC.
