Families of two minor girls, who died in strikingly similar accidents, have donated organs of their deceased children to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, officials said.

Both 18-month-old Mahira and 7-year-old Mansi lost their lives after a fall from the balcony of their home. Mahira was a resident of Haryana’s Mewat while Mansi hailed from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh.

Their organs were donated to AIIMS, Delhi within a span of 48 hours of their death, said hospital authorities.

On November 6, Mahira suffered a fall from the balcony of her residence in Mewat. She was brought to AIIMS Delhi’s Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Center (JPNATC) the same day with a severe head injury.

She was declared brain stem dead on the morning of November 11. During her treatment, Mahira’s father Jamshed came across to banner about organ donation while waiting in a park inside the hospital for his daughter to recover. After her death, he agreed to donate her organs when he was approached by doctors and organ transplant coordinators.

“I learned that only a minuscule number of people in India donate organs. I appeal to everyone to take this noble step and save lives,” he said.

In a similar fashion, Mansi also fell from the balcony of her home in Mathura on November 2, was brought to JPNATC and was also declared brain stem dead on November 12.

When approached by Organ Retrieval Banking Organisation (ORBO), her grandfather Mahesh Chand convinced his son to donate Mansi’s organs.

ORBO chief Dr Aarti Vij said, “IEC activities with regard to organ donation play a great role in decision-making by the families, especially when the family has some degree of awareness regarding the concept of brain stem death and organ donation. It is encouraging to know that awareness campaigns of ORBO are becoming instrumental in more and more people stepping forward to donate organs.”

Mahira’s kidneys were transplanted in a 17-year-old and her liver was donated to 7 years old minor at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) hospital. Her corneas and heart valve have been stored in the National Eye Bank and Heart Valve Bank in AIIMS.

Mansi’s liver and a kidney have been allocated to a 12-year-old minor who is admitted to ILBS hospital. While her kidney has been transplanted into another needy patient at AIIMS, Delhi, her corneas and heart valve have been donated to the National Eye Bank and Heart Valve Bank.
