Smart classrooms, digital libraries, digital 3D laboratories, and entrepreneurship in academic curricula will be among some of the salient features of the schools that will be upgraded under the newly-launched PM-SHRI scheme.

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved the Pradhan Mantri Schools For Rising India (PM-SHRI).

The scheme was announced by PM Narendra Modi on Teachers Day, September 5 this year.

“These schools will be technology-driven with digital labs, digital libraries, and 3-D labs. Entrepreneurship will be part of the school curricula,” Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan told reporters after the meeting.

10-day bagless reading management test will also be started in these schools, he further said.

PM SHRI schools will be developed as green schools and environment-friendly with solar panels, LED lights, and advanced waste management.

The Central government will spend Rs 27,360 crore to strengthen as many as 14,600 schools in the next five years between 2022 and 2026.

Kendriya Vidyalayas and Navodaya Vidyalayas are included in the plan, the minister informed.

“PM SHRI schools will focus on learning outcomes of every child in every grade. For better transparency, we are making plans for direct benefit transfer to the schools for the first time,” Pradhan revealed.

An objective assessment would be made to ensure two schools can be identified in each administrative block to enhance the educational standard.

“For the upgradation, every school of PM SHRI model will be allocated Rs 2 crore over two years and school authorities will have the flexibility to use up to 40 per cent of the funds.”

These model schools are expected to cover almost 20 lakh students.

Entrepreneurship will be mandatorily taught in these schools, Pradhan stated.

The selection procedure of PM SHRI schools will be online and schools would be required to apply on a dedicated portal. This portal will be open once every quarter, four times a year, for first two years of the scheme.
