NEW DELHI: In the wake of the heavy police deployment outside Congress headquarters, the grand old party on Wednesday launched a scathing attack at the Centre following the Enforcement Directorate sealing the offices of Young Indian (YI) at the party-owned Herald House in New Delhi.

Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters here, Congress general secretary and national media in-charge Jairam Ramesh called the moves “politics of revenge and threats”, and a plot to distract attention from issues such as unemployment and price rise.

Ramesh, who is also a Rajya Sabha member, hits out at the centre. “The Prime Minister believes in the politics of fear and threat. This is not a democratic way. We will not run away, we won’t be silenced and we will raise our voice and will continue with our protest on August 5 over inflation, GST and unemployment.”

“Our protests against inflation will go on…The government is trying to create an environment of fear. Fear doesn’t exist in the dictionary of Congress,” he said.

Even former Union Minister and senior Congress leader Ajay Maken slammed the government saying Congress issued a circular about the nationwide protest on August 5 over inflation, GST imposed on essential commodities and unemployment. He also reiterated that MPs will go to Rashtrapati Bhawan and Congress workers to protest near the PM’s residence.

Today we received a letter from DCP saying we can’t do any protest, he said.

Maken said that the entire Congress headquarters has been turned into a fortress. “Do whatever you need to do, but we will hold a protest on August 5,” the Congress leader said.

Even senior Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi slammed the government and said, “Fear is not in the dictionary of Congress. These are the actions of a scared government.”

Singhvi said, “Has anybody stopped them (ED)? Sonia Gandhi, at her age, and Rahul Gandhi spent time with the agency. Have they ever evaded the agency summons?”

“They want to do only for intimidation, insult, diversion and digression,” Singhvi added.

He also said that “our voices will not be silenced”. He also said that “we are witnessing a siege mentality in the heart of the capital of the world’s largest democracy”.

“I was astonished to see that people cannot come and go. There are platoons everywhere…The only sole object of this exercise is humiliation, insult and intimidation,” Singhvi added.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Delhi Police had deployed heavy force near the Congress headquarters, 10 Janpath the residence of Sonia Gandhi and 12 Tughlaq Lane the residence of Rahul Gandhi.
