HARIDWAR/NEW DELHI: In a bid to boost the income of artisans, the government is planning to set up a ‘Tourist Craft Village’ in Haridwar where artisans can showcase and sell their artworks to domestic and international tourists.

During a review meeting of the Aspirational District programme in Haridwar, Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal asked the officials concerned to identify land for the craft village.

This kind of initiatives will extend the stay of the tourists and will generate “a virtuous cycle of economic activity”, he said.

Goyal also suggested setting up a lab of APEDA (Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority) in Uttarakhand to engender the credibility of organic products. He further said that the food gains having such a certification will boost the export to the international market.

Notably, Egypt has recently approved India as a wheat import destination. India is eyeing pacts with some other countries to export food grains.

The Union minister instructed the officials to regularly hold ‘DISHA’ meetings to get feedback from the public representatives. District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) have been formed to ensure coordination among all the elected representatives and the district administration for time-bound development.

He also exhorted them to put up details of projects on the websites to encourage transparency and public accountability.

Speaking about the Public Distribution System (PDS), he informed that after the completion of the 2021 census, a revised allocation of ration cards would be undertaken across the country.

Addressing the media about his two-day visit, the Union minister expressed satisfaction with the progress that Haridwar has made in the last four years in education, financial inclusion and agriculture, adding that nutrition remains an area where improvement is needed.
