NEW DELHI: The Roland-Garros Junior Series by Renault officially commenced in Tokyo on October 13, coinciding with Japan’s National Sports Day.
The opening day was marked by a celebratory exhibition match titled “Tennis Biyori,” setting an inspiring tone for the week-long event dedicated to showcasing the next generation of tennis talent.
Representing India in this prestigious junior tournament are Tavish Pahwa and Yashwin Dahiya, who will compete against some of the finest young players from across Asia.
A Dream Start on Roland-Garros Red Clay
The event took place at the Dai-Ichi Life Sogoen Tennis Court in Tokyo, which featured a meticulously recreated red clay surface symbolizing the iconic courts of Roland-Garros. The opening ceremony brought together legends and rising stars alike, with former World No. 1 and tournament ambassador Justine Henin joining Japanese tennis icons Shuzo Matsuoka and Ai Sugiyama in celebrating the spirit of the sport.
The gathering also saw participation from promising junior players, university athletes, and tennis enthusiasts, creating what organizers described as a “dream court” that transcended generations and national boundaries.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Reflecting on his experience, Ryo Tabata, last year’s Boys’ Singles runner-up, shared:
“Losing to Hyu Kawanishi last year actually became a great turning point—it helped me prepare for the main draw at Roland-Garros Juniors in Paris. Competing on the same red clay as Paris was an invaluable experience. I hope this year’s players focus not only on winning or losing but on learning as much as they can.”
His words perfectly echoed the mission of the Roland-Garros Junior Series by Renault—to nurture young athletes and prepare them for the global tennis stage.
Clinics, Collaboration, and Community Spirit
In addition to the exhibition match, a special tennis clinic for U12 and U13 Japanese players was organized with support from Renault, offering young aspirants a chance to play and train on red clay. Broadcaster WOWOW hosted a separate clinic as part of its ongoing commitment to tennis development, while Star Tennis Academy lent its support to the initiative.
Together, these collaborations reflected a shared goal—to make tennis more accessible and enjoyable for communities across Japan and beyond.
Toward the Grand Slams
Serving as the prologue to the main tournament, “Tennis Biyori” celebrated friendship, sportsmanship, and the joy of tennis. Beginning October 15, the group stage (round-robin) matches will officially get underway, marking the start of an exciting journey for Asia’s emerging stars—including India’s Tavish Pahwa and Yashwin Dahiya—as they aim to follow the footsteps of future Grand Slam contenders.
The Roland-Garros Junior Series by Renault continues to inspire the world’s young talents, taking another step forward—from Japan’s red clay to the global tennis stage.
