NEW DELHI: Once celebrated as India’s ‘breadbasket’, Punjab is now poised to emerge as a global supplier of life-saving medicines.
Under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s leadership, the state’s vision of a ‘Rangla Punjab’ — a vibrant, self-reliant, and industrially progressive region — is taking firm shape.
The latest testament to this transformation is the massive ₹1,133-crore expansion by IOL Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals Limited (IOLCP) in Barnala.
A Giant Leap Toward ‘Rangla Punjab’
The expansion project, valued at ₹1,220.83 crore, marks a defining moment in Punjab’s industrial growth story. More than just an infrastructural milestone, it symbolizes the Mann government’s commitment to accelerating development through transparent governance, proactive policies, and investor-friendly initiatives.
Located along Mansa Road in Fatehgarh Channa village, Barnala, the IOLCP unit will significantly expand its chemical and Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) production. The project aims to enhance manufacturing capabilities, introduce new products, and boost India’s pharmaceutical self-reliance — a key pillar of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
Building the Foundation for a Healthier Future
IOLCP, one of the world’s largest producers of the painkiller Ibuprofen, will now scale up its operations with this landmark investment. The new unit — to be established at Village Badbar along NH-7 (Bathinda-Chandigarh Highway) — will boast an impressive production capacity of 860 tonnes per day for chemicals and APIs, a 33 MW co-generation power plant, 483.79 tonnes per day of by-products, and 2250 lakh units per day of formulations.
Beyond production, the project also emphasizes environmental responsibility. The company has earmarked ₹13.90 crore for environmental safeguards to ensure clean air and water in the region. Additionally, its co-generation capacity for power production will expand from 17 MW to 29.75 MW, aligning with the state’s focus on sustainable industrialization.
Jobs, Growth, and Green Development
The expansion will generate direct employment for thousands of Punjab’s youth, providing new opportunities in both manufacturing and technical sectors. Each job created represents a new dawn for families across the state — reaffirming the government’s focus on youth empowerment and inclusive growth.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s administration has been lauded for introducing an “honest and simple industrial policy” that cuts through red tape and replaces bureaucracy with efficiency. These reforms have positioned Punjab as one of India’s most attractive destinations for large-scale investment.
Punjab’s Rise as a Pharma Powerhouse
This landmark investment cements Punjab’s growing reputation as a Pharma Hub of India. With its robust infrastructure, skilled workforce, and proactive governance, the state is now competing with traditional industrial centers in pharmaceuticals and chemicals.
More importantly, the IOLCP expansion exemplifies a deeper vision — a bridge between health and prosperity. It stands as proof that when a government acts with integrity and urgency, progress follows naturally.
The success of the Barnala project underscores how the Mann government’s clear intent and action-oriented policies are transforming Punjab’s economic landscape. By creating a business environment built on trust and transparency, the government has inspired confidence among investors while ensuring benefits reach the grassroots.
As Punjab steps confidently into a new era, this partnership between the government and IOL Chemicals is more than an industrial collaboration — it’s a shared dream of making Punjab “Rangla” once again: prosperous, progressive, and full of promise.
