New Delhi/London: In a landmark step to strengthen digital inclusion and secure communications, India and the United Kingdom have launched the India-UK Connectivity & Innovation Centre, a joint initiative that will drive research, innovation, and global standards in advanced telecommunications.
The Centre was launched under the UK-India Technology Security Initiative, in partnership with UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), India. Both nations have committed a combined £24 million over four years to advance cutting-edge telecom research and development.
A Strategic Partnership for the Future
Officials from both sides said the collaboration is designed to unite complementary strengths in innovation, linking university research, lab testing, and field trials through to market deployment. The initiative will create new commercial opportunities by enabling industry partners to innovate, test, and scale products with a clear pathway for adoption.
The Centre is expected to play a critical role during the next four years, a period when the technological and commercial parameters for 6G will be defined globally.
Three Key Focus Areas
The Connectivity and Innovation Centre will drive advancements in three priority areas:

Transforming Telecom with AI: Using advanced artificial intelligence tools to optimise networks, improve efficiency, and unlock new digital services.

Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTNs): Developing satellite and airborne systems to deliver reliable, high-speed connectivity to rural and remote areas.

Telecoms Cybersecurity: Enhancing network resilience and security by creating open, interoperable solutions that protect both businesses and consumers.
Shared Benefits
Connectivity and telecommunications technologies are considered the backbone of economic growth and national security. By collaborating on a single platform, India and the UK aim to boost innovation ecosystems, strengthen cybersecurity, and create economic opportunities for both countries.
“Developing these technologies together will bring economic and security benefits to both nations, while also helping shape global standards,” a senior official said at the launch.
Backed by Research and Innovation
The £24 million commitment will fund applied research, joint testbeds, industry–academic partnerships, and targeted collaboration in international technical standards development.
The initiative is being hailed as a flagship example of the UK-India Research and Innovation Corridor, reflecting the shared ambition laid out in the Prime Minister–Prime Minister 2035 Vision, which seeks to deepen bilateral ties in science, technology, and security.
The India-UK Connectivity & Innovation Centre is expected to become a hub of next-generation telecom innovation, enabling the two countries to not only keep pace with but also shape the future of 6G and secure communications worldwide.
As digital transformation accelerates globally, the partnership underscores both nations’ intent to strengthen their leadership in telecom research, while ensuring that ‘Made in India–Made with UK’ technologies find a place in the international market.
