NEW DELHI: In a landmark development for Punjab’s industrial landscape, Tata Steel and the Punjab government have jointly launched a ₹2,600 crore low-carbon green steel plant in Kadiana Khurd, Ludhiana.
The groundbreaking ceremony was led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, marking a major step in the state’s economic and social progress.
First Low-Carbon Green Steel Plant in India
This plant is Tata Steel’s first low-carbon green steel facility in India, utilizing Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) technology to produce steel from recycled steel scrap, significantly reducing carbon emissions and conserving energy. The plant will have a capacity of 0.75 million tons per year, reinforcing Punjab’s commitment to green and sustainable industrial development.
Employment and Skill Development
The project is expected to create 500 direct jobs and 2,000 indirect employment opportunities, prioritizing local youth. The state government has also planned skill development programs to prepare young professionals for long-term careers in steel manufacturing, helping them achieve self-reliance.
Government Support and Infrastructure
To facilitate this project, the Punjab government allocated 115 acres of land to Tata Steel in August 2022, provided road connectivity, and ensured simplified government approvals. Financial incentives under the industrial policy, including tax exemptions and investment-based assistance, further improved the investment climate, attracting major industries like Tata Steel to Punjab.
Economic and Industrial Impact
The ₹2,600 crore investment is expected to boost local businesses in trading, construction, and transportation sectors, strengthen the industrial ecosystem, and increase state revenue, positioning Punjab as a key industrial hub.
Supporting Infrastructure: Fabrication Service Center
On March 12, 2024, Tata Steel inaugurated a fully automated fabrication service center in Ludhiana, producing Tiscon TMT rebars and bore pile cages with a capacity of 1,500 tons per month, enhancing production efficiency and quality for the construction sector.
Sustainable Development Goals
By using EAF technology and focusing on recycling, the plant aligns with Punjab’s green development initiatives, balancing industrial growth with environmental protection.
Under the leadership of CM Bhagwant Singh Mann, Punjab is paving the way for a sustainable, industrial, and employment-driven future. Tata Steel’s investment guarantees prosperity for the youth, economic growth for the state, and establishes Punjab as a model for green industrial development in India.
