NEW DELHI: In a historic move to support flood-affected farmers and families, the Punjab Government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, announced a major increase in compensation for crop, livestock, and property losses.
During the second and final day of the special Punjab Assembly session, CM Mann declared that compensation cheques will begin distribution from October 15, ensuring timely assistance before Diwali.
Highlighting the urgency, CM Mann said, “Before Diwali, we will light lamps of happiness on the faces of Punjabis,” emphasizing the government’s commitment to the welfare and prosperity of its people.
The revised relief package significantly increases compensation rates:
-
₹10,000 per acre for 26–75% crop loss (up from ₹2,000–₹6,800)
-
₹20,000 per acre for 75–100% crop loss, including ₹6,800 from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF)
-
₹7,200 per acre for sand removal and desilting
-
₹47,500 per hectare for land washed away
-
₹1,20,000 for fully damaged houses
-
₹35,100 for partially damaged houses
Additionally, ₹4.5 crore has already been released from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to drain water in Ferozepur and Fazilka areas.
CM Mann also criticized the Central Government for releasing only ₹1,600 crore despite Punjab requesting a ₹20,000 crore comprehensive flood relief package. He stressed that the Punjab Government will ensure that relief reaches the people without delay, independent of any central negligence.
The Chief Minister acknowledged the efforts of the youth, NDRF, Indian Army, and social organizations, praising their role in rescuing and providing immediate relief to flood-affected citizens. He also confirmed that a copy of the compensation package will be sent to the Prime Minister, Home Minister, and Finance Ministry to ensure accountability and transparency.
This announcement reflects the Punjab Government’s people-centric policy and dedication to supporting farmers and rural families. With relief cheques being issued before Diwali, the state aims to bring a sense of hope and happiness to every affected household, reinforcing its commitment to welfare, prosperity, and social unity.
This initiative demonstrates that even amidst natural disasters, Punjab is prioritizing timely assistance, farmer welfare, and community resilience, setting a benchmark for effective disaster management in India.
