NEW DELHI: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh today virtually inaugurated the BrahMos Aerospace Integration and Testing Facility in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. This cutting-edge facility, part of the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor (UP DIC), marks a significant step towards reinforcing India’s commitment to self-reliance in defense manufacturing and its evolving aerospace capabilities.
The inauguration ceremony, held amidst ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan, was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Defence and representatives from BrahMos Aerospace. The new facility is expected to boost India’s defense manufacturing by producing up to 80-100 BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles annually, including the next-generation BrahMos-NG variant, which is lighter and more compact.
National Technology Day Significance
During the ceremony, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh emphasized the importance of National Technology Day, marking the anniversary of India’s nuclear tests in 1998. He remarked:
“It is National Technology Day today. On this day in 1998, under the leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, our scientists held the nuclear test in Pokhran and demonstrated India’s strength to the world. This achievement was the result of immense efforts by our scientists, engineers, defense personnel, and other stakeholders.”

BrahMos-NG and Strategic Implications
The BrahMos-NG, the next-generation missile variant, will be capable of being deployed on various platforms, including the Sukhoi fighter jets, which will carry up to three BrahMos missiles. This development enhances India’s defense capabilities, particularly in terms of precision strikes on strategic targets.

The BrahMos missile is a joint venture between the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya. Known for its speed, the BrahMos missile is one of the fastest supersonic cruise missiles globally, with a range of up to 400 km and a top speed of Mach 2.8.
Defence and Economic Growth for Uttar Pradesh
The establishment of the BrahMos facility is expected to play a pivotal role in the development of defense manufacturing clusters in the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor. The facility spans approximately 80 hectares and was built at an investment of ₹300 crore. It also includes advanced capabilities for missile testing, integration, and aerospace-grade component production.

Additionally, the inauguration saw the launch of the Titanium and Super Alloys Materials Plant, a key component of the facility, which will enhance the production of high-grade materials for defense and aerospace needs. Furthermore, the foundation stone for the Defence Testing Infrastructure System (DTIS) was laid, designed to certify and test new defense products.
Defence Minister’s Address and Virtual Inauguration
In his address during the virtual ceremony, Rajnath Singh expressed his pride in the new facility but noted the current geopolitical situation, which prevented him from attending the event in person. He said:
“At the inauguration of BrahMos Integration & Testing Facility today, I feel delighted to speak with you. I wanted to attend in person. But you know why I couldn’t come. Looking at the situation we are facing, it was important for me to be in Delhi. So, I am joining you via video conferencing…”
A Leap Towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat
The BrahMos Aerospace Integration and Testing Facility in Lucknow is not only a major leap for India’s defense sector but also an important milestone for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of an ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India). The facility will not only bolster India’s missile capabilities but also create new employment opportunities and foster innovation by providing industries and startups in the UP DIC with access to the DRDO’s intellectual property rights (IPRs), patents, and technology transfer options.
Strategic Impact: India’s Response to Pakistan
The BrahMos missile system has already seen operational use, particularly in the ongoing strategic operations between India and Pakistan. Reports indicate that the BrahMos was likely used during operations to target terrorist camps and military bases across Pakistan in response to the terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 civilian lives. This marks a significant moment in the missile’s combat deployment history, highlighting its crucial role in India’s defense strategy.
With this new facility, India is not only advancing its defense capabilities but also strengthening its position as a global player in the defense and aerospace sector.
