New Delhi: In an unprecedented move, the United States has issued a security alert directing all U.S. embassy and consulate personnel in Lahore, Islamabad, and Rawalpindi to shelter in place.
This advisory follows reports of drone explosions, downed drones, and possible airspace incursions in and around Lahore, as confirmed by the U.S. Consulate General in Lahore.
“Due to reports of drone explosions, downed drones, and possible airspace incursions in and near Lahore, the U.S. Consulate General in Lahore has directed all consulate personnel to shelter-in-place,” the official security alert stated.
The directive has raised significant concerns about the security situation in Pakistan, particularly in Punjab province, where Lahore is situated. Diplomatic sources noted that while such advisories are standard during volatile situations, the current alert reflects heightened apprehension due to the evolving circumstances in the region.
The U.S. Consulate has also indicated that authorities might begin evacuating areas near Lahore’s main airport, further underlining the severity of the situation. “U.S. citizens who find themselves in an area of active conflict should leave if they can do so safely. If it is not safe to leave, they should shelter-in-place,” the advisory warned.
To ensure their safety, U.S. citizens in Lahore and nearby regions were advised to seek secure shelter, keep travel documents updated, monitor local media for developments, and have personal evacuation plans that do not rely on U.S. government assistance.
The U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Pakistan have committed to providing real-time updates through their messaging system, including the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), ensuring that U.S. citizens receive timely information.
This alert comes amid rising tensions in the region following recent military exchanges between India and Pakistan, which have heightened concerns about cross-border security. Diplomatic sources have emphasized that while the advisory is a precautionary measure, it underscores the seriousness of the evolving situation.
