NEW DELHI: Chennai Esports Global Championship (CeGC) is set to put India on the global esports map. The Tamil Nadu government has announced this international esports tournament, making it the first Indian state to do so.
Tamil Nadu’s Big Esports Move
The CeGC will take place in Chennai later this year. It will feature top teams from across the world. This is one of the biggest investments by any Indian state in esports. Tamil Nadu is taking a major step to develop the industry and raise it to global standards.

The Youth Welfare and Sports Development Department is leading the initiative. The department has been allocated ₹562 crore in the 2025-2026 budget. A part of this fund will be used to organize CeGC. Chennai aims to become a top esports hub, just like it has hosted other major international sporting events in the past.

The full list of game titles is yet to be announced. However, this initiative builds on Tamil Nadu’s previous esports efforts. The state saw massive participation in the CM’s Trophy 2024, where Skyesports organized esports competitions. More than 5,000 players took part from across Tamil Nadu.
Esports Gains Recognition in India
The Chennai Esports Global Championship (CeGC) is a milestone for Indian esports. It reflects the growing recognition of esports as a legitimate sport in the country.
The announcement aligns with national trends. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports recently included esports in its cash incentive program. This decision was widely welcomed by the gaming industry.
The Additional Chief Secretary, Youth Welfare and Sports Development Department, said, “We are thrilled to witness the debut of esports as an event this year. This groundbreaking inclusion reflects Tamil Nadu’s forward-thinking approach to sports and youth engagement. Esports has rapidly grown in popularity around the globe, and by introducing it in the Chief Minister’s Trophy as a demo sport, Tamil Nadu is taking a major step toward recognizing and nurturing diverse athletic talents, both in traditional sports and emerging digital platforms.”
Esports is now a medal sport at the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. It is also set to debut as a standalone Olympic Esports event in 2027.
With CeGC, Tamil Nadu is leading India’s push into global esports. This initiative will nurture homegrown talent and position India as a strong contender in prestigious international esports tournaments.
